Photos by Mark Terrel, Wild Horses of Nevada Photography, February 2010. Fallon "Indian Lakes Road" or "the Broken Arrow" BLM contracted holding facility. Cost to hold the decreasing number of captured Calico mustangs is around $5.75/horse per day: over $10,000 per day in taxpayer money. Thousands of cattle still graze the Calico herd areas where an estimated 600 mustangs remain. 1922 horses were originally captured starting on Dec. 28, 2009 and ending in early February 2010. The death toll stands at 75 (as of 3/12/10) and is rising daily. The BLM reports are online here. At least 40 mares have had spontaneous late term abortions in the pens.
