Born to Be Wild 2023: Meet the Mustangs!

You'll Go WILD
For Our
Guests of Honor
~ Born to Be Wild 2023 ~

We are so thrilled to have not one... not two... but FOUR formerly wild equines (we can't say "horses" because one is a LONG EAR 😀) attending this year's Born to Be Wild event!

Keep reading to meet our first two equine guests of honor, Arrow & August!

Cloud's granddaughter, Arrow, daughter of Cloud Dancer and Red Raven or Shamen, was foaled in July 2007. Named for the Arrow-shaped star on her forehead, she was taken from the Pryors in the BLM roundup of September 2009. She was adopted by TCF board member Susan Sutherland and trained by Makendra Silverman until Susan gave Makendra the gift of Arrow in 2015.

Arrow loves going fast on trail rides, practicing dressage, and pulling her humans around on a sled in the snow. She is a strong and beautiful bay roan mare who can be trusted to give pony rides to neighbor kids of all ages.

Arrow lives with Griffon (a six-year-old Desatoya, Nevada mustang) and August and Ojo (two very handsome Arizona wild burros).

Meet August Jones!

August is an 8-year-old wild burro from Lake Pleasant, Arizona. He had a winding path getting to his home in Centennial, Colorado.

Captured in 2017, he was titled in Kansas and then sold to auction -- where he was likely headed to slaughter. Fate lent a hand when he was rescued, along with a mustang named, Hollywood. The little burro and mustang bonded, and when TCF board member Jaime Johnson adopted Hollywood, she took in August, too.

It wasn't long after when Makendra called Jaime to ask for help finding a donkey needing a home. Jaime replied, "I've got your donkey!"

Makendra, her husband, Chad, and their kids brought August home a few days later. Chad immediately fell in love with this scared, shutdown little donkey. As training progressed, it became clear that August was likely abused in his Kansas days.

A few months later, Chad and Makendra found August a buddy through Burro Basecamp (a non-profit dedicated to finding homes for formerly wild burros). Ojo, too, was an untouched donkey from Arizona. Since then, these "long-eared" boys have progressed to being brave and marvelous friends.

Both August and Ojo enjoy camping with their mustang and human families and running and walking trails around Colorado. Chad and August are the very best of friends. 😄

This is a Family Event - come one, come all!

Arrow , August and the rest of the Cloud team can't wait to see you there!

~ Happy Trails!~
