are Losing the Battle!

Americans LOVE wild horses and burros because they symbolize our long-held and cherished ideals of FAMILY and FREEDOM. Stallions will fight to the death to protect their families. Mares act as leaders and “aunties,” contributing greatly to what some wildlife biologists have referred to as the most sophisticated social structure of any wildlife species in North America.

Wild horses and burros have been rounded up in record numbers over the last few years. Congress continues to increase spending for roundups and warehousing them in holding facilities. There are nearly as many in Bureau of Land Management (BLM) holding facilities (nearly 60,000) as there are living wild and free on the range (estimated 83,000). To make matters worse, BLM is pushing forward with birth control that acts as a chemical sterilant — permanently destroying reproductive organs after just a few applications — in order to continue the decades-old, disproportionate levels of livestock grazing. On average, livestock is allocated 80% of the forage in wild horse and burro habitat; leaving just 20% for wild horses and burros.
