The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is developing the Jackson Mountains Herd Management Area Plan (HMAP), which will set long-term management policies for this herd. Their proposal includes sterilizing up to 25% of the mares, surgically implanting IUDs, and removing 415 of the estimated 545 wild horses currently in the HMA. Additionally, they plan to use the fertility control drug GonaCon, which is known to sterilize mares and disrupt natural wild horse behaviors.

The BLM has known for over a decade that the Jackson Mountains wild horse herd’s genetic health is at risk. In 2012, the agency’s own equine geneticist raised serious concerns about inbreeding and jeopardizing the genetic health of the herd. Yet, despite this clear warning, the BLM has failed to address a solution—adjusting the AML to support a healthy, genetically viable population.

Please take quick and easy action below to voice your opposition to this devastating plan that will have lasting, negative impacts on this magnificent wild horse herd.

We know how hard it is to fight a government machine that seems to operate outside the guardrails—especially when Congress blindly follows the BLM’s lead.

But we must speak up. This ill-conceived proposal cannot go unchallenged.

Wild horses and burros cannot afford for us to grow weary or give up. Their survival, their families, and their freedom depend on us. Stand with us in this fight for their lives, their families, and their rightful place on the range.
Thank you for your help—change is only possible because of you.

The Jackson Mtn HMA is 283,775 acres (276,634 acres of BLM land and 7,141 acres of a mix of private and other public lands), which is equal to approximately 443 square miles. BLM deems 130-217 is an appropriate number of horses for the herd area.

The Jackson Mountains HMA is located 60 miles northwest of Winnemuca, NV, in central Humboldt County.
