Piccolo’s First Drive

Remember Piccolo? She’s the flashy paint filly who was rescued along with 3 other tiny foals after their families were rounded up by BLM, turned over the the Wyoming Livestock Board, and sold to a Canadian kill buyer.

37 horses were captured and sent to slaughter because BLM claimed they were not wild but “estray” (escaped or turned loose domestic horses). We called our four foals the Dry Creek Quartet. You can read their tragic - and triumphant - story HERE.

We always love to receive updates on our rescues and we know you do too! Piccolo was adopted by Charlotte, a longtime TCF supporter, advisor and friend. They live not too far from TCF’s home office in Colorado, so fortunately we get to visit from time to time.

The littlest filly of the Dry Creek Quartet has come a long way in the 6 years since she was orphaned and rescued! My has she grown into a beautiful mare. She has several horse and burro friends in her adoptive home. Just last month her human Charlotte, and her reining trainer Teaghan Weir, brought Piccolo to her first cattle drive in the foothills near Longmont, CO.

As Charlotte tells it, Piccolo’s partner mustang, Carmelita, is wise in the ways of cows and was raring to go as soon as the herd started to migrate. Piccolo was wary at first, but quickly saw that she could move the cows, not the other way around. By the time the cattle arrived at their destination, Piccolo and Carmelita were VERY reluctant to leave them. They appeared to have enjoyed all the silly spins, turns and stops on a dime - it was all part of dancing with the cows. The wranglers said it was their smoothest drive ever and invited Piccolo and Carmelita back for the fall drive.

We will continue to keep you posted on Piccolo and our other rescued horses!

Til next time…happy trails!
